I have been reading a book about regenerative agriculture and until I reached Chapter Three, I never thought much about seeds. I buy organic seeds for my garden, but I did not know about the seeds used by large scale growers. I just thought they used the same seeds either organic or non-organic but on a larger scale. I WAS SO WRONG!
After reading Chapter Three, I did some cross referencing and deeper searching. I also ordered a small packet of sweet corn seeds from a reputable large scale seed company.
NOT ALL SEEDS ARE TREATED.
This is common in large scale agriculture, (especially corn and soybeans, etc. These seeds are pink because they are coated with fungicides, insecticides, or polymers.
The seeds are labeled clearly. " Treated with and do not eat."
UNTREATED SEEDS
No chemical coatings
May still be conventional, (not organic) but not coated
Ideal for home gardeners
Certified Organic Seeds
Untreated and grown under USDA Organic Standards
No synthetic pesticides or fertilizers in production
Often used by regenerative or organic farmers.
How to tell
"TREATED" Has a chemical coating
"UNTREATED" No coating
"CERTIFIED ORGANIC" Untreated and grown organically
